Dr. Charles “Pete” Peterson dedicated his life to coastal research, environmental management, and educating the next generation of scientists and coastal leaders.
As Alumni Distinguished Professor at the University of North Carolina Institute of Marine Sciences, Pete touched the lives of countless students and maintained a boundless enthusiasm and curiosity for marine science. In addition to his responsibilities at the marine lab, Pete also worked to bridge the gap between the academic world and the regulatory one, serving on many government advisory boards and councils over the years, including the NC Environmental Management Commission, the NC Marine Fisheries Commission and the NC Coastal Resources Commission Hazards Science Panel, and was instrumental in developing the state’s Coastal Habitat Protection Plan. We are grateful for his lifelong commitment to our coast and his friendship with all of us at the Coastal Federation.
Contributions made in honor of Dr. Pete Peterson will support the federation’s efforts to continue his legacy of connecting science and coastal management through education programs at the federation’s planned Center for Coastal Protection and Restoration. Visitors will be able access the site via public nature trails and remember Pete at an educational kiosk overlooking Bogue Sound.
